Kristi Nazzaro is a Mixed Media Artist, Instructor and Journal Maker.

She is passionate about her inclusive messages of positivity and validation that are built from the bright layers and bold textures of her easily recognized designs.

Kristi created her first product line of vividly colored, layered journal embellishments called Soul Snacks to support her popular online course, the Soul Snack Tag Journal.

Building community is the foundation of her philosophy. She believes that true healing and connection occur through vulnerability. Kristi believes that kindness heals hearts and forgiveness saves souls.

Kristi’s positive messages can be found in Stampington’s Somerset Studio Magazine, Ranger Ink Tutorials and as a Guest Artist for StencilGirl Products.

When she’s not in her studio, Kristi can be found hiking, gardening and spending time with her family in New Jersey.

What does mixed media art mean to you?

Mixed Media Art to me is literally anything you can use to foster your creativity.  Slow stitching on top of watercolor?  Why not. Buttons from an old shirt used for a journal closure.  Yes please. As an Artist I don’t want to be labeled or placed into one category.  Mixed Media Artist leaves room for me to shift and expand without worrying about staying in one creative lane.

How long have you been a mixed media artist?

I’ve always been a creative person.  But I seriously dove into Mixed Media Art approximately 11 years ago.

How has art impacted or enhanced your life?

Art is the instrument that I use to process what life throws my way.  Art has allowed me to vocalize visually what I feel in my heart.  I’m so thankful that I have found an avenue that supports me through all the trials and tribulations of everyday life.  I’ve also gained an amazing, supportive community filled with other Artists who have become so special to me.  These women have held my hand through some very tough times.  They encourage, support and cheer me on every day.  I have found such beautiful souls in the Mixed Media Art Community.

Tell us about your creative process.

I have a small workspace in my garage but prefer to work at my kitchen table.  I usually listen to music or a podcast when I’m creating.  Most of my creative process starts with bold, bright colors.  I work primarily in Art Journals, so I begin with a colorful background – blues, green, purples.  From there I start to process the words or thoughts that I have tumbling and often stumbling around in my head.  I choose a focal point, maybe a watercolor heart or circle, maybe a piece of ledger paper and then just begin getting the words out.  My process is usually the same but, on occasions, where I am short on time or feeling less motivated, I just make backgrounds in my journals.  That’s always a good place to return to.

What inspires you?

So many things inspire me.  Nature, bold patterns, textures, music, words – I could probably list a million things.

What do you do when faced with a creative block or rut?

I find switching mediums will usually snap me out of a creative rut.  Sometimes just the feeling of going from a paint brush to a stitching needle will allow me to clear my head and get inspired again.  No expectations.

What are a few of the mixed media art supplies you find yourself returning to?

I will forever reach for a Signo White Gel pen.  This is a staple.  I always have make up wedges on hand for applying and blending acrylic paint.  Gel plate for backgrounds.  Kraft paper because I love the look of bright acrylic paint on kraft.

Who are some of your favorite mixed media artists?

Rae Missigman is a huge inspiration for me.  I fangirl so hard over Rae’s art.  I love Colleen Attara as well. Kristin Peterson amazes me.  There are so many.

Where would you like to go with your art? What are your goals?

I’d like to continue to make art that resonates with people.  The goal is always connection.  That being said I think it’s important to make art for yourself as well.  I never want to corner myself into producing art for likes on social media.  I want to create art that fills my cup and the cups of others.  I hope to continue to create more online classes, teach in person and maybe one day have a greeting card line.  That’s been a dream since I was a little girl.

Aside from art, what makes you giddy in life?

I love being outside – whether that’s gardening, hiking, walking on the beach, riding bikes – I love to feel sunshine on my face.  I also love to bake – breads, cookies, scones.  I still have a sourdough starter.  Ha ha.
